NameCheap Domain Registrar Review

Posted on 03 July 2008

Don’t be fooled by the name “NameCheap”… I mean the prices are extremely cheap but the services and products are amongst the best. NameCheap is loved by people within the domaining industry , businesses and individuals alike. Just do a search for “NameCheap reviews” in google and you’ll see the glowing ratings.

E-mail and URL forwarding, security features, free transfers and domain management control are included with all domain registrations. Namecheap proclaims “no hidden charges and you own the domain in your name.” Privacy protection is an option and the site now boasts live support feature for instant response to your questions.

At the time of writing, domain registrations are around $9.99 per year for .com domains and most domains come with free whois protection (except for .co.uk and .us since they do not allow private registrations).

The control is very easy to navigate and fast. Updating nameservers and contact information normally takes 24 hours at most registrars … and at NameCheap they say “allow upto 24 hours” but I’ve never had to wait for more than 10-15 minutes at most.

I’ve been happily using NameCheap for the last 4 years or so. I’ve never had any problems with them and I own over 200+ domain names there. Whenever I’ve needed any help I’ve only had to ask once. Customer service is great.

RATING: 10/10

I often hear stories of Namecheap hijacking domains and raising the price by 200% for the original owner to get back. I will never use namecheap.

Thats quite weird coz I’ve never heard anything like that before in my 5 years of being heavily involved in domain investments. I’ve got like 200 domains with namecheap and never experienced anything like that even on domains which are worth more than $40,000+ or even on developed sites that get tons of traffic

All I have heard is good things about the registrar. It offers cheap domain name registrations.

i completely agree with the 10/10 rating for namecheap. i purchased a .info name (for 2.95, cheapest EVER) and i even got a free ssl cert from comodo with it. can’t beat that deal.

I have to say my experiences with namecheap have been horrendous. I have 2 domains registered with them. I’ve been using their services now for 6 months, and have had 3 different incidences that have completely disrupted my business operations. These disruptions were due to technical issues with namecheap’s services. Their support is literally the worst I have ever had. There is no way to get any phone support. Submitting a ticket on their site rarely gets a response in less than 48 hours, and then the response is something akin to “check it now” with no explanation of what cause the problem.

The most recent outage brought my entire domain to its knees because their DNS server inexplicably went offline. This was the last straw, so I began the process of transferring my domains to godaddy. I am now waiting on approval from my current registrar (namecheap) to complete the transfer, but have not received any communication from namecheap about my transfer process. When I started a chat support session (the only way you can get realtime “support”, and I use the term loosely) I spent over an hour chatting with the guy, who was less than no help. He simply said that the transfer was successful and I needed to wait. When I asked him for an email to that affect, he would not provide one for me, stating that “we do not provide emails of that sort”.

I would highly recommend avoiding this hosting provider. They may be cheap, but you get what you pay for. This is literally the worst customer support experience I have ever had. Beware!

Hi Jason, sorry to hear about the problems you’ve been experiencing with NameCheap. I personally haven’t tried their hosting service - and to be honest I wouldn’t host my domain with ANY registrar… instead all my sites are hosted with dedicated hosting providers.

Namecheap is fantastic for domain registration. It’ll be exactly 4 years I think this month since I first started using them - and have never had any problems that didn’t get resolved within hours.

As I said, if you want good hosting - go with a hosting company… godaddy/namecheap/1and1 are rubbish for hosting. They are domain name registrars - not hosts. Try Hostgator / BlueHost / UK2.net etc. for hosting solutions. Godaddy is no better at hosting that Namecheap or vice-versa.

    Good luck.

    :)
