GoDaddy Review - Domain Registrar

Posted on 03 July 2008

GoDaddy is undoubtedly the most popular domain name registrar in the world. About one-sixth of all domains are registered through GoDaddy, which is twice as many as its nearest competitor.

The company’s business practices are controversial to the degree that they attract some customers and repel others. GoDaddy uses major sporting events and even models to promote their services. However, even detractors agree that GoDaddy has excellent prices and good customer service.

Promotions are frequent, and domains are discounted when bundled with other services. You can always find godaddy coupons for registering new domains , transferring domains as well as for renewals. Regular pricing for .com domains is about $9.00 per year, however with coupons you can get that down to as little as $6.99.

Support is through e-mail, online help, and toll telephone calls. My biggest complaint is that GoDaddy’s interface is difficult to use. Its easy enough to get used to the control panel, however interface is very slow and makes my 3ghz pentium dual core feel like a 486. Aggressive up-selling continues after the sale just after checkout and even through emails. Even so, this hasn’t seemed to affect GoDaddy’s popularity.

I have over 150 domain names at GoDaddy, mainly .info domains due to their $0.99 info registration promotion. I have other extensions too, but not so many .com’s - most of my .com’s are at either DynaDot or NameCheap … I just feel more secure using DynaDot / NameCheap, don’t know why.

GoDaddy tracks the names you look up, and if you don’t buy it right away, they do so they can sell it to you for more later! this just happened to my business partner today. We called up Godaddy, and they didn’t flat out deny it. I’m sure they have bots that scoop up domains if they are deemed as worthy.

I had a domain name with godaddy, and tried to transfer it to my site’s host, who gives me a domain with my package. Godaddy make the process arduous enough for me to just wait for the name to expire (not too long), seeing as there was absolutely no information on their site to help me.

Now that it has expired, they put it up for auction after a few weeks, it didn’t sell, now it’s up again for a smaller price. A quick search showed me that godaddy warehouses any high traffic websites for their own profit. I will never use or recommend GoDaddy ever again.
